yes, i received an incomplete question and misjudged it.
Pankaj your right.

x(height where tree broke)
36-x (portion that fell)
it makes a right angled triangle...
x^2 + 12^2 = (36-x)^2
x=16
Lenght of broken tree = 36-x
= 36-16 = 20

ans is 20.
using triplet it can be easily solved...take base as 12..height as 16
n hypoteneus as 20...

the question is tree of height 36 broke at some height and fell down on road such that its top touches the the other end of road...find the length of broken part ?
width of road is 12

The question is tree of height 36 broke at some height and fell on the road such that its end exactly covers the breadth of the road. breadth of the road is 12
find the height at which tree is broken

Let tree be broken at a height of x
36-x (Broken portion)
36-x=12
x=24
