let maxM no. be x
40x/100 - 10 = 30x/100 + 10
40x-1000=30x+1000
10x =2000
x=200
then
p=40%of200-10=70
q=30%of200+10=70
pass marks=70

let 200 be the max marks then p get 80 marks
and q get 60 marks so passs mark will be 70 so that p had get 10 marks greater than pass marks and q had get 10 marks less than pass marks

let x and y be the maximum marks and pass marks,
then
P got 40% of the maximum marks which is 10 marks more than pass marks
according to this eq can be written as
40x/100 = y+10 ........(1)
Q got 30% of the maximum marks and failed by 10 marks
equation for Q as follows
30x/100 =y-10 ........(2)
by solving eq (1) and eq(2)
we get x=200 and y =70 .
so pass marks y =70.
