We know the expenses are partly fixed and partly varied wit the no of occupants. So if occupants is 60 then each occupant have to bear rs 1200 per month . So in this 1200, part of it, that is rs 600 is fixed and rs 600 varies directly to the occupants.

So for 60 occupants,
Fixed is 600 rs and varied with occupants is rs 600. So the total amount paid by each occupants is 600*60=36000( is the amount varied with occupants)
Similarly for 90 occupants,
Fixed is 600rs and varied is 400 rs. So total varied with the occupants is 90*400=36000
So for x occupants,
Fixed is 600 rs and varied with occupants is 300rs( 900 rs given in qn). So the total varied with occupants is 300*x=36000
Solving above we get x=120.
