Let the initial price be x. Therefore he can purchase 400/x kg.
now, increased price = x+x*25/100 = 5x/4
so now he can purchase 400/(5x/4) kg which is 20 kg less
=> 400/x - 400/(5x/4) = 20
=> x = 4
hence increased price = 5x/4 = 5 Ans.

Explanation:

Old Price is Rupees 4.
25% increase makes it as Rupees 5.

With old price, 100 Kilograms can be purchased for Rupees 400. (4*100 = 400)
With new price, 80 Kilograms only can be bought for Rupees 400. (5*80 = 400)

Hence increased price of rice per kilogram is Rupees 5.

new be 1.25x
(400/x)-(400/1.25x)=20
so solving the equation x=4
1.25 of x=5
therefore rs 5

let earlier price will be rs.x
no of kgs be y
therefore xy=400
increased price be x/4..i.e.,(X+x/4)
no of quantities =y-20
(x+x/4)(y-20)=400
by solving we get x=4....increase price be (4+4/4)=5

Suppose initially the expenditure was 100%
with the hike of 25% in prices......

100% ---> 125%

So to reduce the expenditure back to 100%
a reduction of 20% in expenditure is required..

125% ---> 100% (as 20% of 125 is 25)

But according to ques 20% is equivalent to 20 kg so,
100% must be equal to 100 kg ..

thus initially 100 kgs of rice was being purchased...
with Rs.400/100kg= Rs.4/kg

Thus 25% of 4 is 1....
So, there is an increment of Re.1...
leads to the price of rice as Rs.5/kg....

25% increase means 125/100
a person is able to purchase 20 kilograms less for 400/-
so'400 is the base prise or cost price
so'125/100 *400=500
so,for 20kg less=500-400
for 1kg less=100/20=5kg

1/n increase in price result in 1/n+1 decrease in purchase (1/n decrease in price results in 1/n-1 increase in purchase)

Here 1/4 increase in price result 1/5 decrease in purchase which is 20 kg
Let x be initial quantity ,
1/5*x=20
x=100 Price will be 400/100=Rs.4
25% increase in 4 is ,
4*125/100=5
