let one side =x then another side will be 36-x
structure will be like this

now x^2+12^2=(36-x)^2
x=16
hence one part will be 16m
and another part will be 20 m

let the tree b broken at a point x
so sides are:
x,(36-x) and 12m
Now, on analyzing we observe that it will form a right angled triangle
Using hypotenuse rule:
x^2+12^2=(36-x)^2
on solving, we get:
x=16 m
other part (36-x)=20 m

width of road=12 mtr
let the broken part is of x meter then remaining part will be of 36-x meter.
now we can apply theorem
x^2=(12)^2 + (36-x)^2
x=20
this is required answer....

Since the total height of tree is 36 m. Now let x m from top, the tree gets break. So the remaining height of the tree is (36-x) m.

Now the broken part that is x m will act as hypotenuse in triangle where base is road (12 m) height is remaining tree length that is (36 - x) m and we have to find x. Now since the tree is perpendicular to the road so the tree, tree's broken part and road will form a right angled triangle. By Pythagoras Theorem we have,
(Square of broken tree part length) = (Square of road length) + (Square of rest tree length after broken)

i.e., square of x = square of 12 + square of (36-x)
which yields
x = 20 m

broken part = 36-x m, rest = x m, 36-x,x,12 m should form a right angled triangle with hyp 36-x m. thus 12^2+x^2=(36-x)^2 => x=16 m => broken part = 36-x=20 m.
