let no. of mathematicians=x & no. of physicists=y
total age of mathematicians=35*x
total age of physicists=50*y
also,total age of mathematicians+physicists=40(x+y)
so 35x+50y=40(x+y)
or 35x+50y=40x+40y
or 5x=10y
or x/y=2/1
x:y=2:1

answer is 2. solution is given below.
let number of mathematicians be 'a' and that of physicists is 'b'.
sum of age of mathematicians be 'x' and that of physicists is 'y'.
according to question
x/a=35 or, x=35a----eq1
y/b=50 or, y=50b----eq2
(x+y)/(a+b)=40------eq3
solving eq 1,2 and 3 we get
10b=5a or a/b =2
