let the max mark be x n passing mark be y.
peter got 30% of max mark =.3x i.e (x*30/100)
but he failed by 10 mark
therefore passing mark i.e y=.3x+10
now, paul got 40% of max mark=.4x
but he get 15 marks more than passing mark
therefore passing mark i.e y= .4x-15
now from eq (i) n eq(ii)
.4x-15=.3x+10
x=250 i.e max mark
therefore passsing mark(put value of x)
y=.4x-15=.3x+10= 85
ans:D

let max marks = 100x
peter obtained = 30x
passing marks = 30x+10
Paul obtained = 40x
passing marks = 40x-15
Equating the passing marks--
30x+10 = 40x-15
x = 2.5
Hence maximum marks = 100x
= 100*2.5

peter obtained = 30x
passing marks = 30x+10
paul obtained = 40x
passing marks = 40x-15
Equating the passing marks--
30x+10 = 40x-15
x = 2.5
Hence maximum marks = 100x = 100*2.5 = 250 Marks. option (B)

LET,TOTAL MARKS=X
Peter got= 30x/100=3x/10 paul got=4x/10
now, 4x/10-3x/10=25,
so x/10=25 or x=250
so ans is B. 250

and also 40%of total-15
compare both
.3x+10=.4x-15
x=250(total)
passing marks =30%of 250+10=85
