The average of 11 numbers is 50. If the average of first 6 numbers is 49 and that of last 6 is 52.Find the 6th number.

Solution

avg = 50 so total sum of 11 numbers = 550
let 6th number is x, so according to the given condition
sum of first 5 numbers = 49*6 - x = 294 - x
sum of last 5 numbers = 52*6 - x = 312 - x
so 6th number x = 550 - (294 - x) - (312 - x) = 2x - 56
so x = 2x - 56 implies x = 56

550-(294+312)=56 =ans

X1+X2+X3+X4+X5+X6=49*6=294.................(i)
X6+X7+X8+X9+X10+X11=52*6=312............(ii)
add (i) & (ii)
X1+X2+X3+X4+X5+X6+X6+X7+X8+X9+X10+X11=294+312
X6=606-550=56(ans)

Assume they are divide into 5=1=5
Take any 1 overlap
=1=5 (1+5=last 6)produces an effect of +2
This should be negated by the remaining numbers ie 5= by a -2 effect for the avg to be 50
but 5=1 produces -1 effect meaning =1= has a +1 effect on the first 5 when taken with them
Thus we take 6*+1 =6 and add to the Avg 50
You can do this with any grouping 1st 5 and 6
Or First 6 and 5
