wen 1canary is placed in cage 1 canary remains, wen 2 canary s placed n 1 cage, 1 cage remains

4 canaries, 3 cages.

let number of canaries be x
number of cages be y

first condition: If you put in one canary per cage, you have one canary too many.
=> x= y+1
second condition : If you put in two canaries per cage, you have one cage too many.
=> y = x/2 + 1
=> x = 2y - 2

Subtracting first from second :
0 = y-3
=>y=3
substitute in eq. 1 => x=4
