One a particular day, he left home at the usual time but his bike broke down after travelling some distance, After waiting for 15 min he walked to the office at a speed of 18 KMPH and reached the office at 11 AM. Find the distance for which Adi had to walk.

Adi had to walk 9kms.

He left home at 9.30AM. And travel by bike for 27kms.(i.e., 36km/hr)

That means till 10.15A.M he travel by bike. Then bike broke down.

And wait for 15min (i.e)till 10.30A.M.

Then he cover balance 9km by walk at speed of 18km/hr.

And reach office at 11AM

He took (30-15=15) minutes extra while walking as compared to bike ride.

If x is the distance covered while walking, then
x/18 - x/36 = 15/60=1/4
x/36 =1/4
x= 9 kms

Ans. Adi had to walk 9 kms.

Solution:
Adi reaches office in one hours on bike at a speed of 36 KMPH. So the distance of office from his house is 36 Kms. On the day when his bike broke down let he travelled x km by bike and (36-x)km by walking. He had also waited for 15 minutes and reaches office at 11 AM. So he reached office in 3/2 hrs on that day.
He travelled by bike for x/36 hrs.
He walked for (36-x)/18 hrs.
He waited for 15/60=1/4 hrs.
So x/36 +(36-x)/18 + 1/4 = 3/2
=> x = 27
So Adi covered distance of 27 kms by bike and 36-27 = 9 kms by walking.
Time taken to cover 9 kms by walking at 18 KMPH = 1/2 hrs. = 90 minutes.
