50,000 is the right answer..
suppose he had 100 rupees(100%)
he gave 40% to wife
left with him=60 RS
20%of 60 to his sons
left wid him=48 Rs
Half spent
left wid him=24 Rs
therefore,24 Rs(or 24%)=12000
therefore 100%=(12000/24)*100=50000

if initially he had Rs.x, then

( If he gave 20% to each son), then
x*0.6*0.4*0.5 = 12000
x= 100000

If he gave total 20% to 3 sons, then
x*0.6*0.8*0.5= 12000
x=50,000

Let the initial amount be = x
(40/100)*(20/100)*(1/2)*x=12000
by simplifying we get,
3x/25=12000
x=12000*(25/3)
Finally, x=100,000

let d initial amt be x,
amt gn to his wife=(40/100)x=2x/5
bal=(x-(2x/5))=3x/5
amt gn to sons=(20/100)*(3x/5)=3x/25
bal=3x/5-3x/25=12x/25
amt spet on miscellaneous items=(1/2)*(12x/25)=6x/25
which is equal to 12000
so 6x/25=12000
then x=50000

Let the initial amount with Mr.jones be Rs.x then,

Money given to wife= Rs.(40/100)x=Rs.2x/5.

Balance=Rs(x-(2x/5)=Rs.3x/5.

Money given to 3 sons= Rs(3X((20/200) X (3x/5)) = Rs.9x/5.

Balance = Rs.((3x/5) – (9x/25))=Rs.6x/25.

Amount deposited in bank= Rs(1/2 X 6x/25)=Rs.3x/25.

Therefore 3x/25=12000

x= ((12000 x 35)/3)=100000

So Mr.Jones initially had Rs.1,00,000 with him.

Short-cut Method :

Let the initial amount with Mr.Jones be Rs.x

Then,(1/2)[100-(3*20)]% of x=12000

=> (1/2)*(40/100)*(60/100)*x=12000

x=((12000*25)/3)=100000

let x is the total income of mr.jones
40% gave to wife
20% to sons
20% to items and remaining 20% to be deposited in bank
so total income of mr.jones is 60,000

suppose initially had=100x rs
give wife =40x
remaining= 60x
amount of 3 sons= 3[60x*20/100]=36x
remaining amount = 60x-36x=24x
spend on various items = 24x/2=12x
given 12x=12000
x=1000
hence initial amount =100x =100000 rs

Let us take total money = x;
40% of x = 2/5x (given to his wife) left amt = 3x/5;
20% of 3x/5 =3x/25 (given to his children) left amt= 12x/25
his purchased his items with half the left over amout = 12x/50
left over amout is 12x/50 i.e 12k(given in question)
