A car is traveling at a uniform speed. The driver
sees a milestone showing a 2-digit number. After
traveling for an hour the driver sees another
milestone with the same digits in reverse order. After another hour the driver sees another milestone
containing the same two digits with a zero in
between(0). What is the average speed of the driver.

- LET THE 1ST MILESTONE BE 10X + Y
NEXT MILESTONE = 10Y + X
LAST MILESTONE = 100X + Y
SPEED OF THE CAR = 2 - 1 = 9Y - 9X MILES/HR
IN 2 HRS THE CAR TRAVELS 18Y - 18X MILES
THEREFORE, 10X + Y + 18Y - 18X = 100X + Y
SOLVING WE GET Y = 6X
BUT X,Y SHOULD BE INTEGERS BETWEEN 0- 9
THIS IMPLIES X = 1 , Y = 6
SPEED OF THE CAR = 45 MILES/HR - 12 years agoHelpfull: Yes(19) No(5)
- First milestone =xy
2nd milestone=yx
3rd milestone=x0y
distance travelled in first hrs=yx-xy
next 1 hrs=x0y-yx
yx-xy=x0y-yx
(10y+x)-(10x+y)=(100x+y)-(10y+x)
x/y=1/6
it means
1st milestone=16
2nd milestone=61
3rd milestone=106
so dist covered is 61-16=106-61=45miles/hr - 12 years agoHelpfull: Yes(19) No(0)

- hi trisha u r not getting how the speed is 45 miles/hour
in second solution u get y=6x after that u get x=1 and y=6 put these values in e
equation 9y-9x=0 then 9(6)-9(1)=0 ie 45mileshour - 12 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(1)
