Age Problem
. Mr. Dash has 3 sons whose ages are respectively a, b and c. The grandfather has bought a cycle for the eldest son, mother has bought a bag for the youngest one which cost Rs150/. The sum of ages of the eldest son & one son is 15.The difference of age of sons is 3 & 2.Then what is the age of the eldest son?
Read Solution (Total 5)
-
- see a+b=15
a-b=3
if we add above 2 statements then we get
2a=18
a=9
since a-b=3
9-b=3
b=9-3=6
now b-c=2
6-c=2
c=6-2=4
a=9,b=6,c=4 - 12 years agoHelpfull: Yes(21) No(5)
- let age of a=x,b=y,c=z;
x+y=15;--1
x-y=3;--2
y-z=2;
taking 1& 2
x=9;
y=6;
z=4;

- a=eldest son;b=elder son;c=younger son;
b+c=15;__________(1).
case a: a-b=3_____(2a) & b-c=2____(2b)| case b: a-b=2_____(3a) & b-c=3____(3b)
solving equ(1) and(2b) we get |solving equ(1) and(3b) we get
b=17/2 (not possible) | b=9;and c=6;a=11;
while considering the differences of ages a-c can also be thought of
but can be eleminated by using the option as they are 2 digit and the sum
of the ages of b and c is 15 so they should be single digit in order to keep
the difference 2 and 3 - 12 years agoHelpfull: Yes(5) No(2)
- let A---- eldest son
B&C-----youngest sons
i.e
A+B=15
and
A-B=3 and B-C=2
by using simultaneous equation
A=9
B=6
C=4
the age of the eldest son=9

- assume youngest son's age as x
middle x+3
eldest x+5
eldest + one son (youngest)=15
( if u take eldest and elder son equation doesnt satisfy
2x=17,which is impossible, as he has given the difference in the form of integers)
x+5+x=15
2x=10
x=5
ages are 5, 8, 10
so the answer is 10.
hope this serves abit. - 11 years agoHelpfull: Yes(1) No(0)
