Maths Puzzle
A train leaves a station precisely on the minute, and after having traveled 8 miles, the driver consults his watch and sees the hour-hand is directly over the minute-hand. The average speed over the 8 miles is 33 miles per hour. At what time did the train leave the station?

- 10:40 hrs
time taken by train= 60*8/33= 160/11 min
minute hand covers @6 deg per min , an angle of 6*160/11=960/11 deg
hour hand covers @ 1/2 deg per min , an angle of 2*160/11=80/11 deg
As hands are coinciding now,
angle between hands at the time of departure from station = 960/11-80/11= 880/11=80 deg
Angle between 2 hands of clock = 6M -(30H+M/2)= M*11/2-30H
if we get a negative angle ,it means that the hour hand is ahead of the minute hand.
For 80 deg angle, one possible time is 1040 hrs. - 12 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(0)
