All faces of cube with an eight-meter edge are painted red. If the cube is cut into smaller cubes with a two-meter edge, how many of the two-meter cubes have paint on exactly one face?

• There are 6 faces of cube. Imagine one face first. It is of length 8. It is now divided in length of 2. Thus, no. of cubes now is (8/2) is 4 horizontally. There are 4 cubes vertically as well. Thus, total cubes in one face are 4x4=16. But cubes along the sides are painted from other sides as well(Imagine!!) thus, only center 4 cubes are painted on one side. this is for one face... So for 6 faces it is 6x4=24.

• The edge of the cube=8
  Then it is cut into cubes of edge=2 i.e; 8/2=4 cubes per edge
  Now the question asked is no. of small cubes having paint on exactly one face
  4*4=16 no. of cubes from one side of the bigger cube satisfies the condition
  A cube has 4 sides so 16*4=64
  but 4 cubes from 4 corners will have two of their sides painted so no. of cubes with exactly one painted side=64-4=60

• If there are n cubes lie on an edge, then total number of cubes with one side painting is given by 6×(n−2)2. Here side of the bigger cube is 8, and small cube is 2. So there are 4 cubes lie on an edge. Hence answer = 24.
