A bag contains six sticks of the following lengths 1 cm, 3 cm, 7 cm, 11 cm and 13 cm. three sticks are drawn at random from the bag. What is the probability that we can form a triangle with those sticks?

o 11/20
o 1

- total possibilities = 5c3= 10
1 3 7
1 3 11
1 3 13
1 7 11
1 7 13
1 11 13
3 7 11
3 7 13
3 11 13
7 11 13
now for making a triangle,, the sum of any 2 sides must be greater than 3rd side
so
3 11 13
7 11 13 are only cases
so P= 2/10= 1/5

total possibilities=6c3=20
now for making a triangle,, the sum of any 2 sides must be greater than 3rd side
so
3 5 7
3 11 13
5 7 11
7 11 13
5 11 13

- wat abt the length of sixth stick ?
- 12 years agoHelpfull: Yes(10) No(13)
- i) Only 5 dimensions are given. What about the dimension of the 6th stick?
ii) So counting only for 5 sticks, the number of selection of 3 from it = C(5,3) = 10
iii) The suitable selection of these to form a triangle is only (3, 11, 13) & (7, 11, 13)
Other selection can not be able to form triangle; since sum of any two of them will not be greater than the third.
Thus the probability of such selection = 2/10 = 1/5
As such there is no suitable choices. - 12 years agoHelpfull: Yes(7) No(5)
- ans 2/5 because 5 sizes are given and 2 ways are there to form triangle..
- 12 years agoHelpfull: Yes(4) No(8)
- total ways is 5C3
but only 2 ways are to form a triangle.
so probability=(no of ways in which triangles can be formed)

- question is wrong :
actual question is :
A bag contains six sticks of the following lengths 1 cm, 3 cm, 5cm ,7 cm, 11 cm and 13 cm. three sticks are drawn at random from the bag. What is the probability that we can form a triangle with those sticks?

o 2/5
please solve.....guys

- * Taking 5 as the left stick
The combinations are 6C3 =20
"For a triangle the sum of squares of two sides should be lesser than than square of third side"
Hence we can make triangles with all combination !!!
( Remember we can make triangle .. we need to exact third side... The value of length should be larger" Example 1 3 5 ...1sq+3sq=10 while 5sq=25 ..
hence if we join them we can form with(PYTHOGRAS THEOREM)
1 , 3, root(10)=3.14 ( we have excess of 3.14 as 5 ) so we can form a triangle...
THIS APPLIES to ALL COMBINATIONS so
20/20=1
option b) is Answer

- Total possibilities 6c3=20
To form a triangle;sum of two sides should be smaller than third side.
So possibilities are:
1 3 5
1 3 7
1 3 11
1 3 13
1 5 7
1 5 11
1 5 13
3 5 11
3 5 13
3 7 11
3 7 13
Possibilities are 11
Hence total possibility is 11/20 - 5 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(0)
