At 12:00 hours jake starts to walk from his house at 6kms an hour. At 13:30 hours, paul follows him from jake's house on his bicycle at 8 kmph. When will jake be 3 kms behind paul?
Read Solution (Total 15)

- upto 13:30 jake covered 6*1.5=9km
then paul need to be ahead of 3 km.so he go 12km.
their relative speed is 2km per hour.(same direction).
so 12km divided by 2 is 6hrs.
hence from 13:30hrs ,6hrs is added.so answer is 19:30 hours.

- 8t-6(t+1.5)=3
t=6hour
at 19.30(13.30+6)hours

- at 13.30 jake - 9km ---- paul - 0km
@14.30 jake- 15km ---- paul - 8km
@15.30 jake- 21km ---- paul - 16km
@16.30 jake- 27km ---- paul - 24km
@17.30 jake- 33km ---- paul - 32km
@18.30 jake- 39km ---- paul - 40km
@19.30 jake- 45km ---- paul - 48km
or another method is by relative speed
their relative speed is 2km per hour.(same direction).
so 12km divided by 2 is 6hrs.
hence from 13:30hrs ,6hrs is added.so answer is 19:30 hours.

since jake start at12:00 wd the speed 6 at t13:30 we will be 9 km away. now paul follows him at 13:30 with speed of 8.. so with each one hour increase the b?w will decrease by 2. so no of hours reqd to make the gap 3 is (9-3)/2 ( distance/ relative speed) which is equal to 3. so 13:30+3:00=16:30 is the ans

- let they will meet after t hrs.
then distance travelled by paul in (t-1.5)hrs-distance travelled by jake in t hrs=3
(t-1.5)*8-t*6=3
or t=7.5
thus they willmeet after 7.5 hrs
