Please help me to understand this expression

[7(x-5)-19]-[4(x-6+10] If a map has a scale of 11/2 inches to the mile and if a distance between two points on the map is 9 inches apart, how much is that distance in actual miles?

The book says 6 miles. why? 11/2 * 9??
