22) A boy buys 18 sharpeners (brown or white) for Rs. 100. For every white sharpener, he pays one rupee more than the brown sharpener. What is the cost of white sharpener & how much did he buy?
Read Solution (Total 13)
-
- If he bought x white sharpeners @ Rs (y+1) and (18-x) brown sharpeneres @ Rs y per sharpener, then
x*(y+1)+x*(18-x)=100
x= 100-18y
Only integral value of x less than 18 will be 10.
then x=10, y=5
so he bought 10 white sharpeners @ Rs 6 per sharpeners and 8 brown sharpeners @ Rs 5 per sharpener.

- Guys don't confuse this problem,
Logically think,go for an option wise
1)5,13-13 white sharpner means remains 5 brown sharpners-and here said white sharpner cost is one rupee more than brown
hence we easily calculate
5*13=65-white shapner
4*5 =20-brown sharpner-one rupee less than the cost of white so only here i mentioned 4 and remains sharpner 5..
Then calculate the total=65+20=85(Not satisfied.because the total is 100)
2)2nd option is 5,10
same to calculate previous one:
5*10=50
4*8 =32
total=82(Not satisfied)
3)6,10(3rd option)
6*10=60
5*8 =40
60+40=100(Satisfied).Hence this is the answer
Is it useful??I need your comments..

- we know that a boy buy 18 sharpeners for rs. 100.
so the 8 brown sharpeners- each 5 rs.
and 10 white sharpeners- each 6 rs.
then 8*5+10*6=100 - 12 years agoHelpfull: Yes(15) No(15)
- @GARIMA can u plz expln wht is the meaning of only integral val of x less than 18 is 10?/ plz reply soonnn

- He will buy qo white sharpeners at 6 rupees each.
so no. of brown sharpeners is 18-10=8.
and cost of a brown sharpener is cost of white sharpener-1=6-1=5
thus 8 brown sharpeners at 5 rupees each - 12 years agoHelpfull: Yes(3) No(5)
- Y+Z=18
Yx+Z(x+1)=100
18x+Z=100
let x=5
Z=10
Z*x+1=10*6=60
Y*x=8*5=40 - 12 years agoHelpfull: Yes(2) No(6)
- let brown be x,white = 18-x,
cost brown=y,white= y=+1
so x*(18-x)+x*(y+1)=100
x=100-18y
solving we get x=10, y=5
so he got 10 white sharpners for6, 8brown for 5rs ,
8*5+10*60=100 - 9 years agoHelpfull: Yes(2) No(1)
- 6 *10+ 5*8= 60+40
=100

- If Cost of one brown sharpener = x, then cost of one white sharpener is x+1. Suppose he bought y brown sharpeners then 100 = xy + (x+1)*(18-y). 100 = xy + 18x - xy + 18 - y. 82 = 18x -y. Since y>0, y = 18x - 82. So x cannot be 1,2,3,4. Suppose x = 5 then y = 8. Then it satisfies the condition. So cost of one white sharpener is x+1 = 6 and he bought 18 - y = 10 of them.

- Assume that he bought b, brown sharpeners and w, white sharpeners and the cost of brown sharpener is x and white sharpener is x + 1
So w(x+1) + bx = 100
w + b = 18
b = 18 - w
Substituting in equation 1, we get w(x+1) + (18 -w)x = 100 so w + 18 x = 100
Take option 1: If white sharpners are 13, x = (100 - 13) /18 = 4.833
Option 2, If white sharpeners are 10, x = (100 - 10)/18 = 5 So white sharpeners cost is 6.
Option 3 Satisfies this condition. - 8 years agoHelpfull: Yes(1) No(0)

- 18 sharpners he buyed
total rupees 100
so there are 10*6=60 brown sharpners ; 8*5=40 white sharpners
the answer is the cost of white sharpners is 40- and he buyed 5 white sharpners. - 8 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(2)
TCS Other Question
Question data are wrong.
According to ours consideration
The 2nd condition given is wrong it should be two more than the age of other two children...
Let the three grandchildren age be a,b and c
Thus, a is youngest, c is eldest.
c = 3a.........(i)
c = 2+(a+b)..........(ii)
=> 3a = 2+a+b
=> 2a = 2+b
Thus, the ages are.....
a, 2a-2 , 3a.
Two of their difference is 3.
Thus, a- 2 =3 or a+2 =3 or 2a =3
a =5 or a =1 or a =3/2.
Thus ages are, 5,8,15
or , 1,0 3 (not possible). or 3/2, 1, 9/2 (not possible.).
The answer should be 15.
A grand father has 3 grand children. Age difference of two children among them is 3. Eldest child age is 3 times the youngest child’s age and the eldest child age is two year more than the sum of age of other two children. What is the age of the eldest child?
