A hollow pipe has circumference 28 cm. A bug is on its wall(outside) at a distance of 48 cm from top. A drop of honey is on the wall(inside the pipe) at 24 cm from top but diametrically opposite to bug. Find the shortest distance bug has to travel to reach honey.
Note: Thickness of pipe is negligible
Read Solution (Total 11)
-
- circumference= 28
both on opposite side, so bug travel half of circumference to reach there
that means the diameter distance = 8.9 from 28= 2*3.14*r
and distance vertically is 24
by pythagoras h^2= p^2+b^2
p=24 b= 8.9
shortest distance= 25.59 - 12 years agoHelpfull: Yes(11) No(10)
- shortest distanc is 74cm.

- Extending the pipe virtually above the top, the total vertical distance would be 48+24 = 72 cm
And horizontal distance would be half of the circumference = (28/2) = 14 cm
So by Pythagoras theorem, diagonal distance would be: sqrt(14^2+72^2)
=> sqrt(5184+196) = sqrt(5380) => 73.35 Ans - 12 years agoHelpfull: Yes(7) No(3)
- It will become a rectangle of 14*24
so the diagonal of the rectangle is shortest way and ans is sqrt(14^2+24^2)=27.78cm - 12 years agoHelpfull: Yes(5) No(6)
- 48(distance from top)+ 25.6 (hypotenuese)= 73.6 cm

- guyz there is a little mistake in my solution in place of 8.9 it will be 14
ans is 27.78
- 12 years agoHelpfull: Yes(3) No(2)
- shortest distance is 73.60

- bug is outside 48cm below from top
for reaching top it will have to cover 48cm
half circumference = 14
honey is at 24cm inside the pipe to another 24
total = 48+14+24= 86 - 12 years agoHelpfull: Yes(1) No(3)

- bug is on the upper side of cylinder and 48 cm from top and the honey drop at 24 cm ,so the min distance cover by bug to reach honey is = 48+24=72
