- In a 1000 m race, 'A can give B a start of 40 m' B runs (1000 - 40) = 960 m
this says that To cover a race of 1000 metres, A will have to cover 1000 metres while B will have to cover only 960 metres
similarly C runs = 936 m
A : B = 1000 : 960.
A : C = 1000 : 936.
B : C = (B/A)*(a/C)= (960/1000)*(1000/936)=960/936
When B runs 960 m, C runs 936 m.
When B runs 1000 m, C runs (936/960)*1000 = 975 m
