Wislet starts from Coimbatore at 6 a.m. at a constant speed of 40 kmph. She halts at Mettupalayam for half an hour and then drives at 70 kmph. She reaches Ooty at 9.30 a.m. which is 180 km away from Coimbatore. What is the distance between Mettupalayam and Ooty?

  If distance between Coimbatore and Mettupalayam is 'x' Km, and Between Mettupalayam to Ooty=180-x Km. then total time taken=3 1/2 or 7/2 hrs.
  So (x/40) + (1/2) + (180-x)/70=7/2
  On solving, x=40, So 180-x=180-40=140

  Total time travel between Coimbatore and Ooty is 3 hours. (7am, 8am, 9am, 9.30am and half an hour rest. So 3.30 hours - .30 hours = 3 hours)
  
  x/40 + (180-x)/70 = 3
  we get x=40
  Distance between Mettupalayam and Ooty is 180-x = 180-40 = 140 km
