Middle – earth is a fictional land inhabited by Hobbits, Elves, dwarves and men. The Hobbits and the
Elves are peaceful creatures who preferslow, silent lives and appreciate nature and art. The dwarves and the
men engage in physical games. The game is as follows . A tournol is one where out ofthe two teams that play a
match, the one that loses get eliminated. The matches are played in different rounds where in every round ,
half of the teams get eliminated from the tournament. If there are 8 rounds playedin a knock-out tournol how
many matches were played?
a) 257
b) 256
c) 72
d) 255

• answer is 255
  using the reverse approach we got number of teams totally playing as
  in 8 th round-2
  inn7 th-4
  in 6 th- 8
  in 5 th-16
  and so on.......
  in 1 st round-256 teams
  they gave that in every round half teams get eliminated so to eliminate half teams the no of matches played shouod be equal to half the no of teams ineach round as it is knock out tournment
  so no of matches played in 1 st round-256/2=128
  in 2 nd round=128/2=64
  and so on.......in 8 th round no of matches played=1
  total no of matches played=1+2+4++8+16+32+64+128=255

• since there are 8 rounds and the final winner is one match i find solution using reverse approach i.e.,
  winner is 1 batch then the teams played in
  round 8 will be 2
  round 7=4
  round 6=8
  round 5=16
  round 4=32
  round 3=64
  round 2=128
  round 1=256
