The value of diamond varies directly as the square of its weight. If a diamond falls and breaks into two pieces with weights in the ratio 2:3. what is the loss percentage in the value?

Solution:-
Let the weight of diamond be 'W'
V is proportional to W^2
Now diamond breaks into weight ratio of 2:3
That is 2x + 3x = W
x= W/5
2x = 2/5W
3x = 3/5W
The value of new diamond = 4/25 W^2 + 9/25 W^2
= 13/25 W^2
Loss percentage in value = (W^2 - 13/25W^2) * 100/W^2
= (12/25) * 100
= 12*4
= 48%

then x=k*25 for bigger diamond.

hence loss%=25k-13k/25k=12/25*100=48%
