Rectangular tile each of size 70cm by 30cm must be laid horizontally on a rectangular floor of size 110cm by 130cm,such that the tiles do not overlap and they are placed with edges jutting against each other on all edges. A tile can be placed in any orientation so long as its edges are parallel to the edges of floor. No tile should overshoot any edge of the floor. The maximum number of tiles that can be accommodated on the floor is:
Read Solution (Total 4)
-
- Area of tile = 70*30 = 2100
Area of floor = 130*110 = 14300
No of tiles = 14300/2100 = 6.8
So, the no of tile = 6

Make a rectangle.
Mark its length as 130cm and breadth as 110cm.
Draw 3 tiles horizontally one below the other i.e. length of tile parallel to the length of the floor.
This way you can draw only 3 tiles as 110 = 3*30 + 20. 20cm breadth is wasted.
Now, at the right part of the floor:
length(of floor) remained = 60cm
breadth(of floor) remained = 110cm
Thus, 2 more tiles can be fitted vertically(i.e. Breadth of Tile parallel to Length of Floor) adjacent to each other.
Though area left is enough to adjust 1 more tile but for that we have to break the tile into pieces which we are not allowed to do and overlapping is also not allowed.
This is how only 5 tiles can be fitted in total. - 9 years agoHelpfull: Yes(7) No(1)
