- first consider the conditons
elder as X; 2nd youngest as Y; 3rd grand child as Z
(1) X=4Z
(2) X=3+(Y+Z)
also remember that difference between 2 children among 3 is 5
so lets assume YandZ's age differnece is 5
consider different values for Z
when substuiting Z= 1,2,3 we cannot satisfy the above conditions ...but when Z=4 ..
then X=4(Z)=4(4)=16...(I)
so difference between Yand Z is 5..so Y=9..
which even satisfies X=3+(Y+Z)
X=3+(9+4)
X=16...(II)
from (I).... X=4(Z)=4(4)=16
and (II) X=16
so since the conditions are satisfied ...X=4,Y=9,Z=16
which infers that second child is 9 yrs old - 8 years agoHelpfull: Yes(12) No(2)
- let, eldest grandchild age=F
second grandchild age= S
youngest grandchild age=T
Given that F-S=5 =>F=S+5
F=4T
F=3+S+T
=> S+5=3+S+T
=>T+3=5 =>T=2
=>F=4T=4(2)=8
=>s=F-5=8-5=3
So, the age of secong grandchild is 3 years - 8 years agoHelpfull: Yes(10) No(0)

- E=4X
Y=X
Middle grandchild(m)=x+5
4x=3+(x+5)+x
x=4
x+5=9 - 8 years agoHelpfull: Yes(3) No(4)
- let the age of eldest grandchild (A)=x
then the age of youngest ( C )= 4x
C= 2nd elder grandchild.
4x= B +x+3
B=3x-3
then we can write
A B C
4x 3x-3 x
a/c to question,
case1:
4x-(3x-3) =5;
x=2;
then age B=3
case2:
(3x-3)- x=5
x=4;
the age of B= 9;
thus , there are two possible answer: 3 or 9

- let us consider three grandchildren as A,B and C.
suppose A is elder and C is Younger,we have to find age of B.
as per given data
=> A-B=5.........(1)
=> A=4C............(2)
also,, A = (B+C)+3...(3)
from 2 and 3
=> 4C=(B+C)+3
i.e. 3C=B+3
=> B=3C-3....(4)
put the value A and B from 2 & 4 in eq . 1
i.e. => 4C-3C+3=5
=> C=2
from 4.....
=> B=3(2)-3
B=3
from 3.....
=> A=(3+2)+3
=> A=8..
So, the required age of second grandchild B is 3 years..

- LETS CONSIDER ELDER AS X; SECOND AS Y; THIRD AS Z
GIVEN
(1) X=4Z
(2) X=3+(Y+Z)
(3) Y=Z+5
SUBSTITUTE (3) IN (2)
WE GET
(4) X=3+(2Z+5)
NOW SUBSTITUTE (1) IN (4) & SOLVE
WE GET
X=16; WHICH GIVES Z=4; Y=9
HENCE THE AGE OF SECOND GANDCHILD IS 9 YEARS - 7 years agoHelpfull: Yes(2) No(0)
- answer is 9

- considering E-eldest,M-2nd grand child, Y-younget grand child;
given conditions are:
difference between ages of two of three grand childs is :5;
E=4*Y;
E=3+M+Y;
i.e 4*y=3+M+Y
Now considering the difference between middle one and the youngest one is 5(M-Y=5);then
4*(M-5)=3+M+M-5 => 4M-20=2M-2
M=9.
So,the age of the 2nd grandchid is 9 years. - 8 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(0)

- Most of the people have only considered x-y = 5 or y-z = 5 and neglected x-z=5. My answer considering x-z = 5 is here.
x = 4(z) given
4z = 3+(y+z) given
x-z = 5 considered
4z-z=5
z=5/3. Which means a = 20/3 , b = 2
The required answer is 2 years and it satisfies every condition given.

- youngest be x , then eldest = 3x.
3x = y + x + 2 => y = 2x -2
so ages are 3x , 2x-2 and x respectively.
also difference between two of the child's ages is 3
so 2x-2 -x = 3=> x = 5 , so second grand child = 3x = 3* 5.
=15. - 1 year agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(0)
