each hour and rests for a while when he slips
back 20 feet before he again starts climbing
in the beginning of the next hour. If he begins
his ascent at 8.00 a.m., at what time will he
first touch a flag at 120 feet from the ground

  So, the monkey ascends 90 feet in 9 hours i.e. till 5 p.m.

• 30feet claim (first) - 20feet (rest)= 10feet claims an hour
  For 8 hour = 80feet
  Next 80+30=110 feet (first)
  110-20(rest)=90
  Next 90+30=120(first)
  So it take 9 hours

• for every hour monkey climbs 30feet and slips 20feet, which is 10feet per hour. since (30-20).
  In this fashion, monkey reaches to 90 feet in 9 hours. As monkey climbs 30 feet every beginning of hour, at the beginning of 10th hour, monkey reaches 120 feet. since 90feet (for 9 hours) + 30feet (beginning of 10th hour).
  Therefore total time taken for monkey to climb 120feet is 10 hours. If monkey starts in the morning at 8:00am, then it reaches 120feet at 6:00pm.

• read the question carefully and you will get that in 1hour he will climb only 10 feet.
  so 1hour = 10 feet
  so 120 feet = 120/ 10 = 12 hours
  so if he starts at 8am then he will reach 12o feet at 8pm..
  and if u add few spare times in between each hour then
  9pm
  so answer is either 8pm or 9pm
