Time Distance and Speed
43.Two trains are travelling in opposite directions at uniforms speeds of 60 kmph and 50 kmph.They
take 5 seconds to cross each other.If the two trains travelled in the same directions.then a passenger
sitting in the faster moving train would have overtaken the other than in 18 seconds.what are the
lengths of the trains?

- 102.77 m. & 50 m.
Let the length of the faster moving train be x m and slower moving be y m and their speed be 60 kmph and 50 kmph.
60 kmph=60*(5/18)=50/3 m/s and 50*(5/18)=125/9 m/s
Relative speed in opposite direction=50/3 + 125/9 = 275/9 m/s and
Relative speed in same direction=50/3 - 125/9 = 25/9
Time taken to cross in the opposite direction=(x+y)/(275/9)= 5 sec.
=> x + y= 1375/9 ---(i)
Time taken by faster train to cross the length of slower train in same direction=y/(25/9)=18
=> y=50 m.
Substituting value of y in (i), we get x= 925/9 =102.77 m. - 7 years agoHelpfull: Yes(10) No(2)
