Now what is the remainder when the number given above is divided by 36.

number is divisible by 4 as last 2 digits are 40.
sum of digits = 45*4 +1+2+3=186
For number to be divisible by 36, sum of digits should be divisible by 9 and last 2 digits should be divisible by 4.
To meet these conditions,
divisible number will be 24 less than
12345678910111213141516......37383940. so that last 40 is replaced by 16
and hence sum of digit becomes 189 and last 16 is divisible by 4 also.
