A spruce tree when planted was 3 feet high and it
grew by an equal number of feet each year. At the
end of the seventh year, it was one-ninth taller
than at the end of the sixth year. How tall was the
tree at the end of the twelfth year?

How you can say that tree is growing by 1 feet per year? Its not specified. Its only given that the tree is growing by an equal number of feet that is it will grow by the same amount as its height at the end of year. In this example what I suppose:
Start - 3
first year - 3+3= 6
second year- 6+6 =12
Third year- 12+12 =24 and so on thus it forms a GP
3,6,12,24.......
