Q: There is 1 square & 1 rectangle, square share its 25% area with rectangle and rectangle share its 50% area with square. What is the ratio of length and breadth of rectangle?
.
Options..
1. 3/2
2. 4
3. 8
4. 5/4
Read Solution (Total 18)
-
- area of square is= a^2
area of rectangle is =l.b
as per condition
1/4.a^2=1/2.l.b
=1/2.a^2=l.b
take a value of a lets take as a=4
1/2.4^2=8
try to equate on right hand side l.b=8=2.4=8.1(as 2.4 is not in the answer eliminate and consider 8:1)
ans:3 - 11 years agoHelpfull: Yes(23) No(9)
- the area that both the figure share is common...simply follow these steps:-
1) draw a square
2)divide it in 4 quadrant
3)as square is sharing only 25% it means that it share only one quadrant say 1st
4)also this quadrant is 50% of a rectangle so extend that quadrant to form a rectangle
5) and proceeding like this u will get the answer - 11 years agoHelpfull: Yes(21) No(3)
- answer is 2 which is not given in option
- 11 years agoHelpfull: Yes(20) No(2)
- As exactly 50% or 1/2 area of rectangle is shared by 1/4 area of square
So 1/2 of the rectangle area will be outside of the square
Due to symmetry 1/2 of area of rectangle is square, so remaining half will also be a square.
So the ratio of length to breadth=2/1=2 - 11 years agoHelpfull: Yes(11) No(0)
- divide a Square of length x in four coloums x/4.
.x/4*x is 50 % of rectangle..
extend it to 2x*x/4 is rectangle
ratio=2x/(x/4)=8:1

- Answer will be 8 (200% sure)
1. Draw ABCD a square (Let the side 'a')
2. Divide it in 4 equals parts (Now each part have lenght 'a' and width 'a/4')
3. Take any one part (This part will be half of that rectangle which is sharing its 50% area with square)
4. Complete this half part and make rectangle..
5. Now this rectangle have width 'a/4' and length 'a+a=2a'
So, Ration b/w length and width will be= 2a:(a/4)= 8:1...Answer. - 11 years agoHelpfull: Yes(3) No(3)
- @anjul even i am getting 2 as the answer.
@apoorv can u plz explain how u r getting 8;1 as the answer ? - 11 years agoHelpfull: Yes(2) No(2)
- 2 will be the answer
- 11 years agoHelpfull: Yes(2) No(3)
- Answer must be 2.

- @ritesh, when we expand the rectangle it becomes x*2x/4 and not 2x*x/4
- 11 years agoHelpfull: Yes(2) No(0)
- @ Sneha this is rectangle .u can expand length x or breadth x/4 .
but for given option expand length x to 2x.then u will get correct option.
ans =8:1 - 11 years agoHelpfull: Yes(2) No(3)
- answer is either 2 or 8,but in options there is no 2, so definitely answer is 8.
Solution:
by the given conditions we can conclude that
50% of (L*B) = 25% of A^2
=> 0.5 * L * B = 0.25 * A^2
=>1/2(L*B)=(A^2)/4
=>L*B=(A^2)/2
=>L*B=(A*A)/4;
here B value must be some part of A i.e, A is more than B.
so we can substitute A = 2*B or 3*B or 4*B ...etc
case 1 : if A=2*B then we will get L:B=2:1 (diagrammatically it is possible if we take the rectangle share with quadrant of square which is in square shape)
case 2 : if A=3*B then we will get L:B=9:2 (diagrammatically this case is not 0possible)
case 3 : if A=4*B then we will get L:B=8:1(diagrammatically it is possible if we take the rectangle share with quadrant of square which is in rectangle shape)
Checking with options we will get answer as option 3. - 11 years agoHelpfull: Yes(2) No(1)
