Ratio and Proportion
Two persons X and Y start simultaneously from A and B and walk towards each other. They meet after 1/2 hour and continue to walk towards their destination. If X reaches 25 minutes after Y reached the destination, find the ratio of their speeds.

- X_______________|___________________Y
A C B
Let X's Speed= a km/h
Y's Speed= b km/h
after 1/2 hrs they meet at point C
So..AC= a/2 km (Distance= Speed*Time)
and CB= b/2 km (Distance= Speed*Time)
Now..X have to cover b/2 km distance to reach B
and Y have to cover a/2 km distance to reach A
Time taken By Y to reached at A = a/2b (Time= Distance (a/2)/ Speed (b))
According to question Time taken by X = 25 minutes + Time taken by Y
i.e. Time taken by X= 25/60 + (a/2b)= (6a+5b)/12b
Now again for X
Speed= Distance/Time
a= (b/2) / (6a+5b)/12b..........Equation (1)
By solving Equation (1) we get a:b = 2:3 - 11 years agoHelpfull: Yes(10) No(3)

- Let us take the speed of X=r
speed of Y=s
then in 1/2 hr X travelled =(1/2)r and Y= (1/2)s
then in 25 min X travelled =(5/6)r
so when Y reached its destination X travelled=(6s-5r)/12
so (6s-5r)/12r=r/2s
so r/s=2:3 - 11 years agoHelpfull: Yes(3) No(5)

- Narcissist.:
1/2 = 0.5
AFTER 25% = 75% = 3/4 = 0.75
0.5 : 0.75
50:75

- Lets assume Y reaches in t time from B to A.
And speed of X and Y is Sx & Sy respectively
Lets make equations..
Sx * (1/2) = Sy * (t - 1/2)
Sx * (t- 1/2 + 5/12 ) = Sy * 1/2
Hence , (t - 1/2) * (t- 1/2 + 5/12 ) = 1/2 * 1/2
t = 6 hr
so , Sx/Sy= 2/3
Only problem that i got during the problem solving was to getting the t value. - 8 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(0)
