Maths Puzzle
A batsman had a certain average of runs for 16 innings. In the 17th innings, he made a score of 87 runs thereby increasing his average by 3. What is his average after 17 innings?
Read Solution (Total 1)
-
- Let the average of runs in 16 innings be 'x'
Then total runs in 16 innings = 16x
In the 17th innings, he scored 87 runs
so his total score = 16x+87
then his average = 16x+87/17
given: his new average is 3 more than the earlier one
we have considered his average in 16 innings to be 'x'
then, his new average = x+3
now, we have:
16x+87/17=x+3
solving this equation, we get 'x'=36
now his new average = x+3
=36+3
