In a railway station, there are two trains going. One in the harbour line and one in the main line, each having a frequency of 10 minutes. The main line service starts at 5 o'clock and the harbour line starts at 5.02A.M. A man goes to the station every day to catch the first train that comes. What is the probability of the man catching the first train?

- 0.8 because if the person comes at 5:00 he catches the 1st train. is he comes at 5:01 or 5:02 he catches the 2nd train. if he comes at 5:03, 5:04, 5:05, 5:06, 5:07, 5:08, 5:09 ha catches the 1st train. so we have 8 cases out of 10 to catch 1st train. hence 0.8

- there are two ways to choose a train from the probability should be 1/2

- Ans:1/2
Exp:5:00,5:01-Only Train(1)-2/12(1)
5:02-5:10-both Trains so-8/12*(1/2)
on adding both of these we'll get 0.5=1/2 - 11 years agoHelpfull: Yes(2) No(1)

- suppose we consider 1 hour then we have 1st train at 5,5.10,5.20,5.30,5.40,5.50
6 choices
probability to catch 1st train is 1/6
2nd train-5.02,5.12,5.22,5.32,5.42,5.52 6 choices
probability to catch 2nd train is 1/6
probability to choose btw two trains is 1/2
so probability to choose 1st train is (1/2*1/6)/((1/2*1/6)+(1/2*1/6))=0.5 - 10 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(1)
