Boats and Streams
Speed of boat in still water 10 kmph. If the boat takes 24hr in up stream and 16hr in down stream to cross the same distance, then what will be the distance covered.

- If speed of water is w and distance covered in each direction is s, then
s= 24*(10-w) = 16*(10+w)
or
240-24w=160+16w
or
40w=80
w= 2 kmph.
Then distance covered in each direction = 24*(10-2) = 24*8=192 kms. - 13 years agoHelpfull: Yes(25) No(0)
- x/24+x/16=10
x=96km
to and fro distance=96*2=192km

- still water speed = 10kmph
let d is distancecvrd by boat
so d/24=upwrd speed ( u )
& d/16 = down stream speed ( v )
so still water is 1(u + v)/2=(d/24+d/16)/2=10
d = 192 kms - 11 years agoHelpfull: Yes(5) No(0)
- ANS=2 KMPH
let distance be D
so, D/(10+S)=16 and D/(10-S)=24
so,160+16S=240-24S=D
solving we have,
S=2 KMPH - 13 years agoHelpfull: Yes(1) No(0)
- time=24 hrs -up stream, speed of boat =10kmph
16 hrs -down stream
d=s*t
distance is equal then s1*t1=s2*t2
24(10-x)=16(10+x) let x be the speed of stream
240-24x=160+16x
40x=80
x=2kmph
then distance covered =24(10-2)
24*8=192 kms - 8 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(0)
