  let b be the corner cut
  then sides of the octagon will be sqrt(2)*b
  so, sqrt(2)*b+b+b=2
  sqrt(2)*b+2b=2
  now by solving for b, we will get answer 2-sqrt(2)=0.586

  here a+2*b=2 & a=sqrt(b)
