A telegraph has 5 arms and each arm is capable of four distinct positions including the positions including the position of rest. What is the total number of signals that can be made?

- option b:1023.each arm has 4 chances i.e., 4 positions.therefore 4^5.but in that there is a position where all the arms are in rest position so that there will be no signal.so we have to exclude it.so,the answer is 4^5-1=1023.

- since there are 5 arms with 4 singals each..so 1 arm can make 4 signals in this way 5 arms can make 4^5 signals.but we see that 1 signal out of these 4^5 signals is rest signal.so we have toexclude it..
