a person covers half his journey by train at 60 kmph ,the remainder half by bus at 30 kmph and the rest by cycle at 10 kmph. find his average speed during his entire journey??
Read Solution (Total 4)
-
- 24kmph
let the total distance be x km
x/2 km is travelled by train at a speed of 60kmph
x/4 km is travelled by bus at a speed of 30kmph
and x/4 is travelled by cycle at a speed of 10kmph
so avg speed = total distance/total time
=> x/(x/2*60 + x/4*30 + x/4*10)
=>solving this avg speed= 24kmph - 11 years agoHelpfull: Yes(51) No(1)

- but when I divide x/(x/2*60+x/4*30+x/4*10) Iam getting 1/40 as answer
x/(120x+30x+10x)/4
x/160x/4
1/40...
please correct me if iam wrong anywhere - 11 years agoHelpfull: Yes(6) No(7)
- find out the time taken in half joureny by train and then time taken in 1/4 journey by bus and then time taken in next 1/4 journey by cycle by using distance speed formula(s=d/t) and add the times which comes from three equation and then suppose the total distance is 1 and divide the total distance by total time and you get average speed of his entire journey.
