If the radii of two circles be 6 cm and 3 cm and the length of the transverse common tangent be 8 cm, then the distance between the two centres is

• l2=sqrt(d^2-(r1+r2)^2)
  where l2 is length of transverse common tangent and d= distance between centers and r1 ,r2 are radius.
  squaring on both sides
  8^2 = d^2 - (6+3)^2
  64 =d^2 -(81)
  d^2 =64+81
  d=sqrt(145)
