what is ratio of a:b?
1. a=b-8.
2.a^2=b^2

• from second statement alone:
  a^2=b^2
  a^2/b^2=1
  ===>a/b=+1 or -1
  It can be either +1 or minus 1
  
  from first and second :
  
  b=b-8
  (b-8)^2=b^2
  b^2+64-16b=b^2
  b=4
  a=-4
  a/b=-1
  
  So question can be answered by using both the statements

  from 1 eq..
  =>a^2/b^2=1
  =>(b-8)^2/b^2=1
  then we get b=4
  now put the valu of b in equ.. 1
  then a=-4
  and then put in eqn--2
  then a=-4,+4
  we take -4 for a because of both in -4 comman
  then a:b=-4:4
  =>a:b=-1 answer......

• only with the help of 2nd equation we can find solutation.
  1st eq. a=b-8 from this we can't find the ratio of a and b. but
  2nd eq. a^2=b^2; we have
  a^2/b^2=1 => a/b=1 or a/b=1/1

  put in equ 2
  then we get (b-8)^2=b^2
  then by solving it we get b=4
  then put d value of b=4 in equ 1
  we get a=-4
