we have been quite lucky with wheather recently, it has got steadily little warmer each day,over the last five days.by this, i mean that the temperature rose by same amount each day.the average temperature was 2 degrees C and i know it froze on two occasions.i also know the product of the temperatures was over 500 degrees but below 2000 degrees and each temperature was an integer.
What was the lowest temperature?
a) -10 degrees b)-6 degrees c)0 degrees d) 2 degrees
Read Solution (Total 3)
-
- The temperatures were -6, -2, 2, 6, 10, so the lowest temperature was -6 deg C

- If we take the temperature on the third day to be 'x' and the difference between temp of consecutive days to be 'x',
then temperatures on all the 5 days are : a-2x, a-x, a, a+x and a+2x.
As there were 2 frost days, it is clear that (a-2x) and (a-x) are negative integers.
Average of the temp.(s)= [(a-2x)+(a-x)+(a)+(a+x)+(a+2x)]/5 =2 degree celcius
= 5a/5
=a=2 degree celcius
The lowest temperature must be negative integer and is (2-2x) degree celcius.
lets try (-6 degree) celcius for (2-2x) degree celcius,
(2-2x)= (-6)
2x=8 degree celcius
x=4 degree celcius
therefore, the temps are : (-6), (-2), (2), (6), (10) degree celcius
the product must come between 500 and 2000 degree celcius.
product= (-6)(-2)(2)(6)(10)
= 1440 degree celcius
this satisfies the condition.
therefore, the lowest temp. is (-6) degree celcius.

- The lowest temperature was -6 degrees.
It was increasing each day by 4 degrees.
So temperature on 5 days was -6,-2,2,6 and 10 respectively.
It froze on two occassions when temperature was -6 and -2 respectively.
Product of temperatures was 1440 and 500 - 13 years agoHelpfull: Yes(1) No(0)
