Which of the following set of numbers has the highest Standard deviation?
a)1,0,1,0,1,0
b)-1,-1,-1,-1,-1,-1
c)1,1,1,1,1,1
d)1,1,0,-1,0,-1

- Ans. d) set of numbers has highest standard deviation.
Mean of 1,0,1,0,1,0 is 1/2.
So Standard deviation is sqrt(3*(1/2)^2+3*(-1/2)^2)= sqrt(6*(1/2)^2)
= sqrt(6/4)
Mean of -1,-1,-1,-1,-1,-1 is -1. So Standard deviation is 0
Mean of 1,1,1,1,1,1 is 1. So Standard deviation is 0
Mean of 1,1,0,-1,0,-1 is 0. So Standard deviation is sqrt(1+1+1+1) = 2
Thus d) set of numbers has highest standard deviation.

- mean=sum of elements divided by no of elements
standard deviation=sqrt((number-mean)^2/no of numbers))
so answer b holds good - 13 years agoHelpfull: Yes(2) No(2)
