There are 2 friends peter and paul. peter age was twice as old as paul when peter was as old as paul is now. sum of the present ages of peter and paul is 35. what is the present age of peter?

  a-x=2(b-x)
  (past age peter) = (present age of PAUL)
  (a-x)=b
  given sum of their present ages is 35
  a+b=21
  solving above three eq'ns we get a=21
  so answer is 21

  So, y years ago Paul's age was x/2.
  So, according to the question Peter's old =Paul's Present age=x
  Now, Paul's present age=Paul's old age(y years ago)+y(Since we assumed it y years)
  i.e. x=x/2+y
  so, y=x/2
  Now,Present age of Peter is x+y =>x+x/2
  and Present age of Paul is x.
  so sum of their age is x+x+x/2 =3(x)/2=35(given)
  so x=14 i.e Paul is 14 years old
  and Peter's present is 3(x)/2=21 is the answer.

  on solving we get a=15,e=20.

  when peter was as old as paul is now means, (e-a) years ago.
  example if ur age is say 20, ur niece age is 10, when u tell when i was in ur age it means (ur age- her age) yrs back.

  now peters age is y=2(2x-y)

  hence y=20
  peter age is 20 years
