Time Distance and Speed
2 workers, one young and one old, live together and work at the same office. It takes 20 minutes for the young man to walk to office. The old man takes 30 minutes for the same distance. When will the young man catch up with the old man, if the old man starts at 10:00 a.m. and the young man start 10:05 a.m.?
Read Solution (Total 12)
-
- Distance = Speed * Time;
Let the distance will be 30m between Home and Office,
Hence Old Man's speed is 1m/min
and Young Man's speed is 1.5m/min
Old man starts at 10:00, and Young man starts at 10:05,
Old man travels 5m, Young man travels 0m at 10:05;
Old man travels 10m, Young man travels 7.5m at 10:10;
Old man travels 15m, Young man travels 15m at 10:15;
So both will meet at 15m apart from home at 10:15 A.M - 11 years agoHelpfull: Yes(36) No(0)
- we know (speed ratio)=1/(time ratio)
sy/so=30/20=3/2
sy=3m/min
so=2m/min
let they meet after x time of start of old man
as they travel equal dist
2*x=3*(x-5)
x=15
at 10:15

- x/30*t=x/20*(t-5)

- distance is samei.e;"d"
d=s*t
s1t1=s2t2
dt/30=d(t-5)/20
t=15
at min. of t=10 ie;10:15 am - 11 years agoHelpfull: Yes(3) No(0)

- common between two numbers i.e LCM of 20 and 30 is 10,in fact they will meet at 10 min,if both start at 10:00 but young man started late for 5 min so,10+05=15 min

- simple ratio equation
ratio in speed between young and old:20:30=2:3
so old and young will meet at 10:15am
