USA+USSR=PEACE.what is P+E+A+C+E????

• The letter U must represent 9; there's no other way for a four-digit number and a three-digit number to make a five-digit number.
  
  The letters P and E must represent 1 and 0. Since USSR is 9000 and something, and USA is 900 and something, the sum must be at least 10000 (since it's five digits) but can be no larger than 10998.
  
  Now let's look at it column-by-column:
  
  In the ones column, we have R+A=E. We know E is zero, but you can't add two non-zero numbers to get zero... so really, R+A=10, and there's a carry into the tens column.
  
  In the tens column, S+S+1 = C. (The +1 is the carry from the ones column). Now, if S is 5 or more, there'd be a carry into the hundreds column. If S is less than 5, then there isn't. (Remember this for the next paragraph.) Either way, we know C must be an odd number, because S+S is always even, and adding one makes it odd. Since P=1 and U=9, there are only three possibilities left for C: 3, 5, and 7.
  
  In the hundreds column, S+U=A+10 if there's NO carry from the tens column, or S+U+1=A+10 if there IS a carry from the tens column. (There's a +10 because we know that there MUST be a carry into the thousands column, because the final result must be at least 10000). But we know U is 9. If S+9+1=A+10, then that means S and A are the same number, and that's not allowed. So if we work the logic back, we know there must be NO carry from the tens column. And that means, because of what we figured out in the last paragraph, that S must be less than 5.
  
  So now, let's look at the possible values for C, 3, 5, and 7:

• @All: Addition of two 1-digit nos can at max give a carry of 1 to the next left column. Hence, "U" in "USSR" has to be 9 for the addition to become a 5-digit no. Just give a thought !!!
