Time Distance and Speed
The distance between the two stations X and Y is 220 km. A train leaves station X for Y at a speed 80 km/hr. After half an hour another train leaves station Y for X at a speed 100 km/hr. Find the distance of the point from X, where the two trains meet.
Option
(a) 100 km
(b) 120 km
(c) 80 km
(d) 140 km

- ans option b)120km
For first train dist. travelled in 1/2hr=80*1/2=40km
now let a point M at a distance (40+d)km from X be the meeting point.
So, time(T) needed for the first train to travel a distance of dkm T =d/80hr
And this time(T) will be equal for the second train leaving Y to meet first train, covering a distance of (220-(40+d))=180-d at a speed of 100kph
T=180-d/100
equating both T we get d=80km
So distance of the point from X, where the two trains meet (40+d)=40+80=120km
