Maths Puzzle
there are 8 equilant balls.but 1 of them is different(more) weight than other.how can u find the differ ball by weighing two balances only..?

- Take any three and weigh against any other three. If they weigh equal, the different one is in the remaining two, which can then be found from one more weighing against each other. But if they weigh different, take the heavier set of three. Weigh any one aginst any other. If they weigh equal, the remaining is different. Else, the heavier is different.

- first time 3 on one side and 3 on other side and 2 outside
if both sides equal...then defective ball is outside else inside
now take the defective set and put 1 ball on one side and other ball on other side. - 14 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(1)
- Lets say 8 balls are A,B,C,D,E,F,G,H. Only one is more weight. So all other are equal.
First Weighing:
ABC vs DEF - if both weighs equals then different ball is anyone among G,H.
if the weighing differs then the side going down has different ball.
So, in first weighing we eliminate six or seven balls.
Second Weighing:
if u have only 2 balls left to test then weigh those two with one in each side.one going down is different ball.
if u have 3 balls left then test any two of them with one on each side. one going down is different ball. if both equals then 3rd left out ball is different.

- say pans of balance are A and B.
Put 3 balls in each pan.
If A=B. then one of balance 2 balls is heavier which can be found in 2nd weighing.
If A>B, then one of 3 balls in pan A is heavier.
In second weighing put one ball from these 3 balls in Pan A and one ball in Pan B.
If A=B, then third ball is heavier.
If A>B, then ball in pan A is heavier.
so possible in 2 weighings.
