Please help me with a step by step process for solving linear equations. My problem is:
x + y = 4
x - y = 5
I don\'t know what the first step should be.

• x + y = 4 ---->(1)
  x - y = 5 ---->(2)
  
  you can solve it by many methods... one among them is substitution method...
  
  Just find out d value of any variable (x or y)
  
  Am finding value for x
  from eq (1)
  
  x + y = 4
  x = 4 - y --->(3)
  
  now sub x=4-y in eq (2)
  
  x - y = 5
  4 - y - y = 5
  4 - 2y = 5
  -2y = 5-4
  y=-1/2
  
  now sub y=-1/2 in any eq (1) or (2) to calculate x value
  
  x + y = 4
  x + (-1/2) = 4
  x =4+1/2
  x= 9/2
  
  So the values are x = 9/2 , y= -1/2
  
  You can also solve this by elimination or graphing method
