Time Distance and Speed
trains a and b are travelling on the same route..heading towards the same direction.train b has already covered a distance of 220 kmbefore the train a started.the two trains met each other after 11 houra after the starting of train a. had the train travelling towards each other from a distance of 220 km then they would have met after 1 hour.now what is the speed of train a and b?
Read Solution (Total 1)
-
- 120 and 100km/hr
Let x be the speed of a and y speed of b
When both trains travel towards each other
speed = x+y
given distance = 220
time taken = 1hour
speed = distance/time
x+y = 220/1
x+y = 220 ----(1)
Let d be the additional distance travelled by the trains
ie total distance travelled by the trains is
distance = 220+d
time taken by a = 11 hours
speed = (220+d)/11
x = (220+d)/11---(2)
Time taken by b to cover the distance d is
time = 11
so,
Speed = d/11
y = d/11---(3)
Substitute value of y in eqn(2)
x = 20+y
x - y = 20----(4)
Solving (1) and (4)
x = 120km/hr
and
y = 100km/hr
