A number of friends decided to go on a picnic and planned to spend Rs.960 on food. Four of them, however, did not turn up. As a consequence, the remaining ones had to contribute Rs.40 each extra. The number of those who attended the picnic was:

• If x is no of friends planning to spend Rs. y each and a total of RS 960.
  Then
  x*y=960
  (x-4)*(y+40)= 960
  
  solving these, we get
  x= 12, y = 80 ..... earlier case
  Now 8 friends attended picnic and spent Rs 120 each making total of Rs 960.
